Three more people in Canada have died after COVID-19 – a potentially lethal form of car pollution – was detected in their vehicle.

The highway patrol in the eastern province of Ontario said it was the first fatal crash involving the highly explosive vapor.

There have now been 741 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario since April 2018.

Three people were killed and 47 more injured when the Tesla Model X SUV they were in struck a truck and burst into flames near Windsor on 30 May.

They were travelling in a Tesla, which is one of the vehicles now subjected to extra safety checks by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

COVID-19 is produced when fuel is left in engine compartments too long, and it is manufactured as a result, making its presence in vehicles a potentially serious safety issue.

Deaths from COVID-19 have increased by 10% compared with the same period last year, a report by the ministry said.

An investigation into the 30 May accident is ongoing.

Toronto police said the Tesla involved in the crash had been taken to a fire services lab after the crash for analysis.

The police probe found the car’s battery pack and air bag control unit had recently been modified, which could have affected the effectiveness of the system.

While carmakers are urged not to operate these modifications, it’s still unclear whether the modifications were done before the accident or afterwards.
