Meet the amazing pantsuit that Oprah wore to watch Adele perform on ‘Oprah: Where Are They Now?’

Adele was on Winfrey’s show on Friday night, with the expectation that the conversation would be focused on Adele’s show tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC, for her ninth edition of her Adele at the Apollo show. But on the show, Oprah showed up in a different, significantly different kind of outfit: a perfectly tailored white shirt (it’s a Beyoncé T-shirt from the singer’s 2017 Mrs. Carter Show World Tour) that sits around her waist.

It’s not the kind of outfit that would have been a perfect fit on Adele on her show in New York. But on Winfrey, it was a different story entirely. Oprah’s black pantsuit from her first season of the talk show, which she first wore to the show in 1992, was also the kind of ensemble that would fit right at home on the first episode of a talk show starring one of her favorite celebrities, Oprah Winfrey. It was also a chic way to have a little fun while getting deep into the conversation about Adele’s favorite topics: soul music and divas.

The phrase “jiggery-pokery” is the adage to define a dance move that creates confusion, and almost nobody can really explain it well. But imagine what it’s like to be Oprah. As long as you can pull off the dance that needs to be pulled off, it’s hard to fathom how this is ever not funny. It must be a tough deal to understand that she is showing up to a talk show in black pants while everyone’s attention is on this perplexing outfit. But somehow, Oprah always makes it look effortless and effortless makes it look easy. And as long as her pantsuit can transform her into whatever she wants to be, or give her the opportunity to be whatever she wants to be, it’s not that unusual.

When Adele came out in a white pantsuit on Friday, she was never going to outshine Oprah in terms of a million photoshopped memes; it’s basically impossible to do. When the two met in 1991, you could imagine that people making jokes about Oprah pulling off black pantsuits 24/7 was still some time in the future. But everyone’s image of what black pantsuits should look like are relatively distant memories now, at least for the vast majority of us. In 2017, in an Oscar show commercial, Quentin Tarantino was asked how he would wear a suit. He said that he’d go “evening dress-ish,” meaning, get some long pants and long socks and go out on the town. He seemed excited about it, telling MSNBC: “Do you know what night dress-ish is? It’s a black suit with white pants — but it has a black dress dress underneath it.”

Watching this interview, it’s clear that Adele will never put on a black pantsuit to shake her booty on the weekend. Instead, she’ll always stay true to the past. But that’s never going to stop the fact that she looks damn good in one.
