The reigning US Open champion is skipping the Paris tournament.
She will take an extended break before she makes her competitive return at the Miami Open, where she has committed to play the clay-court tournament.
The 19-year-old Osaka said on Sunday she will play in the Sydney International in January.
“I want to give myself every possible opportunity to continue my tennis career,” Osaka said. “It’s my dream to play on the Grand Slam circuit, and I know I could not do this with the same back pain that I’ve been dealing with.
“So I wanted to announce my withdrawal from the French Open so that I could fully focus on my rehab. I will take some time away from competition before I return to the court in Miami.”
She had reached the quarter-finals in Rome earlier this month before withdrawing from the Wuhan Open in China at the weekend, citing back pain.
Osaka, who was ranked as high as ninth in the world after her US Open win, will make her Miami debut next week.
